Crop Protection Program

The Crop Protection Program is mandated to conduct research, develop technologies, and implement sustainable management strategies for major insect pests and diseases affecting priority crops in Rwanda in order to enhance agricultural productivity, improve farmers’ incomes, and strengthen food security and livelihoods.

The program focuses on surveillance, monitoring, prevention, and control of emerging and existing crop pests and diseases, particularly those intensified by climate change effects. It is responsible for developing and disseminating integrated pest and disease management technologies and providing technical guidance to farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

In fulfilling its mandate, the program strengthens the capacity of frontline extension agents and farmers through training, field visits, extension campaigns, and awareness creation initiatives. The program also develops and updates extension materials, management guidelines, radio and television programs, and documentary content to support effective dissemination of crop protection technologies and best practices across the country.
